SermonNews™ is a co-operative website of new and true sermon illustrations from the world's headlines submitted by and for Christian communicators. SermonNews was started in 2005 by Brian Mavis and David Tscherne. The two had met and worked together previously at Outreach, Inc, where Brian was Manager of SermonCentral and David was the Director of New Business.
As the Senior Editor of SermonNews, Brian wrote as well as edited most of the illustrations on the site for the first couple years. But in 2007, Brian joined the staff at LifeBridge Christian Church. As his ministry responsibilities kept growing, his time for writing and editing kept shrinking. So in late 2007, he entrusted David with sole charge of SermonNews. But Brian continues to add a few stories from time to time.
David is a graduate of Golden Gate Theological Seminary, has a Master of Divinity degree, and is an ordained Southern Baptist minister. He has been a pastor and church planter, and ministered at Novato Christian Fellowship in Novato, CA, and Chapel of the Hills and Daybreak Community Church, both in Carlsbad, CA.
He later was employed at Outreach, Inc, in Vista, CA, and served in a number of roles there, including New Church Development, where he developed much of the initial curriculum for the popular Four Laws of Effective Outreach course.
Over the years, David also taught both New Testament and Systematic Theology classes at Southern California Bible College and San Diego Baptist Bible College.
David is currently retired from pastoral ministry. He is an active member of CedarCreek Church, a large, dynamic, multi-campus, church-planting, missions-minded, seeker-focused church in Perrysburg, OH (just outside of Toledo). Yes, Toledo has one of the largest and fastest growing church in the country, averaging 8,500 in attendance each week.
In August 2011, David turned over SermonNews to me, Matt Neace. I am currently a pastor of a Southern Baptist church in Northern Kentucky outside of Cincinnati, Ohio. I graduated from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in May of 2001 with a Advanced Masters of Theology degree.
I have been pastoring since 1995. First at Otter Creek Baptist Church in Nebraska, Indiana and currently I am the pastor of First Baptist Church of Silver Grove, Kentucky. My hobby is hunting great sermon illustrations and I will do my best to share many of the treasures I find so that you can also use them to illuminate your sermons.
